You know those moments as a parent where you just want to yell, "Hurray!"
I had one the other night. In the continuing saga of my six-year-old's veggie wars, I, his ever loving mom, who wants to make sure my son has more than chicken nuggets fueling his little body, am documenting this small veggie victory for posterity.
Come, sit down at our dinner table for one evening and get a taste of what transpires.
Joel: (whimpering while staring at his plate) I'm going to regret this...
Mom: (smiles) Joel, you have to eat one bite of your peas.
Joel: (waving his hands in a panic) I'm out of juice!
For any of you entering our saga for the first time, juice is the magic elixir that makes the veggies slide down.
Mom: I'll get you more juice.
Joel: (whining) Don't you remember, peas are torture for me?
Mom: Here's your juice.
Joel: (Joel gulps down a few peas.)
Mom: (smiles while reflecting on our previous carrot caper that lasted for 30 minutes instead of 3 minutes like our pea adventure) Joel, you did a good job eating your peas buddy.
Joel: (nods his head) Peas get cold fast. I just ate the two hot ones.
Well, what can this Mommy say but, "One small spoonful of peas for child, One giant leap for motherkind. And lets not forget, a step in the right direction towards Ephesians 6:1."
Live the adventure,
Susan
P.S. Please pray for me and my family. We will be traveling to Maryland where I will be giving my keynote speech, Living the Adventurous Life, at a women's breakfast at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Bel Air. Since I've been writing longer than I've been speaking, I especially ask that you pray for my heart to be calm and that I might present the Gospel clearly. Thank you my friends and prayer warriors!

It is good to know that someone else is fighting the same battle. Last night we let the picky one pick out his own veggie. He selected a nice yellow pepper because of the color. He had only one bite before grabbing his juice nad taking a big gulp. Then he said, Dad I almost puked, please don't make me eat any more. Then he went back to his chicken nuggets. Oh well another battle lost. We have met the enemy and it is veggies, :)
I must not have been a very observant mother because my daughter didn't tell me until she was grown that she was tucking those peas in the side of her mouth and spitting them out when she left the table.
You story was cute and I'll be praying for you.
Kids will be kids
Pray for a safe and blessed trip to MD
I knew were a virtuous woman...I don't serve peas because I don't care for them(in fact peas never enter my brain wave, shame on me)...you go girl! Hooray for Joel!
Oh Susan,
I will be praying for your trip to Maryland...traveling mercies and as the Lord continues to use you as His vessel that you will be blessed...those that hear would have their hearts stirred and He would be glorified.
Helen
As a pre-school teacher, I glean from your patience, that he even at two and that was good enough for you ;)
p.s have you ever read the children's story about the little pea who ate candy for dinner and hated it? But in the end he got his dessert, and it was yummy veggies? I HIGHLY recomed it for you and your son.
Hurray! A victory indeed! :)
I am lifting prayers for you. I do know and understand your heart in this speaking thing! May the God of peace give you great peace beyond measure! May your words be His words.
You will do great in your obedience to Him!
Many blessings my friend,
Angela
I can surely see that the Lord is blessing you! I love that one giant step for motherhood quote. He is indeed making strides towards Eph. 6:1. Said a prayer for your speaking engagement. God is doing great things in your life--He seems to be really using you!
"I'm going to regret this" I love it! Hooray for the pea victory. Too funny!
Wishing you confident thoughts while you prepare for you speaking engagement, praying for peace in your heart & confidence & God's words!
*hehe*...
Have a safe trip - I am sure it will be a great ADVENTURE :-)
(((hugs)))
I do I understand this battle. That's my rule too--you at least have to try it! Joel cracked me up though!
Praying for peace to rule your heart and mind and that God would give you the words to speak. Praying also for your protection, in Jesus' name.
Hi!
I am BACK!Explanations on my blog!
Praying for you all. Thanks for taking me back a bit with my kids:)
I will be over again soon.
Jennifer
So Joel can only eat HOT peas? Next time you can simply say, that's why God made microwaves. HA!
Also, cheez whiz is fabulous on peas. That's how I got my kids to eat more than 2 peas.
You know my Anna. She surprised me the other night when I plopped a spoonful of green beans on her plate and she ate them! (dipped in ketchup, of coure) I thought it was a fluke, so I tried it again and she ate them again! I can only figure she's learned to like them at school.
Boy, you never can tell.
My son Jonathan tells my little Bella, our 3 year old, that if she doesn't eat her veggies and whatever else I happen to put on her plate, that her beautiful long hair will fall out. "All princesses have strong beautiful hair because they eat the food their mommies make for them"!
It works for her! :)
..hey, I wonder if Veggie Tale's was somehow inspired by children who wouldn't eat there veggies..
Blessings Susan!
We used to laugh that "if it isn't processed, Chad won't eat it!" So I know the great, and sometimes "pea" sized victories bring rejoicing. Will be praying with you as you travel. Praise Him!
we got one of the boyz to eat some Broccoli and green bean. we just got to keep plodding on we're working on the carrots :o]
One thing my son just would not eat were peas and now at 39 he still will not eat peas. He says it is b ecause I forced him to as a child but I have no recollection of that. My recollection was encourgaed him!
Forgot to mention. My 17 month old grandson loves veges so much he will ask for them
Hi Susan,
I'm glad that the book signing went well! I'm catching up with your news. What a great sign! And that is so amazing that you met another kindred spirit.
My kids always hated lima beans and still do. They would try to swallow them whole so they wouldn't have to taste them. I don't serve them anymore!
I'll be praying for you about Maryland. I also get nervous about speaking. For me...it was my pride making me nervous...because I didn't want to blank out or be embarrassed by a mistake. Stay humble...God will do the rest!
Hey I got something for you at my blog!
Much love,
Angela
Greg, that is so funny! I suppose this is a universal battle!
Oh Dot, I used to tuck my green beans under my plate and sneak them to the bathroom... (naughty girl I was) Anyhow, thanks for your kind words and your prayers.
Amrita, so true and thanks for your prayers.
Helen, now, now, I don't know what to say, because Veggies aren't on my top ten things to eat, but I know their GOOD for me, soooooo, I try. And thank you for your prayers. God just took control of the whole weekend. He is so good!
Colleen, I learned from my oldest son's preschool (bravo to you teachers) to have the kids try a "thank you" bite. Eventually they might learn to enjoy a different food and it's always good to be thankful to God. And yes, about the book. Very cute! Thanks!
Yes Angela, hurray for small victories, right mommy dear? And thank you, you bless me so much. God is so good!
Maxine, you are like a big sister to me, what an encouragement and a dear, dear friend in the LORD :) God always uses you to help me grow and stretch me.
Becky girl, yes, can you believe Joel's comment? "I'm going to regret this?" I knew the moment he said it I had to write it down. That was one of those moments I don't want to forget. Soon you'll be filled with funny Mommy moments too. Praise the LORD! And thank you for your prayers!
Hi ya Helen, (smile). Thanks for your encouragement. Yes, it was a wonderful adventure indeed. God's good.
Angie, yes, (sigh), I'm glad you understand :) And thank you for praying.
Hey Jen, good to see you friend. Yes, it's easy to forget, isn't it? I don't remember many of these things with Jared...
Pam, LOL! Wow about Anna, hurray for that my friend! And about the microwave, unfortunately he knows about that all too well. I can't tell you how many times I've given in and reheated something...
Laurie, oh my, what siblings will say, huh? And about Veggie Tales, it would be interesting to find out their motivation for doing it. I think I heard it had something to do with wanting kids to know that "veggies are their friends!"
LOL Kim, yes, what is it about processed food, huh? Thanks for your prayers!
Good for you Stephen! Can you believe that Joel LOVES broccoli?
Oh my Barbara, how funny. You know, my dear hubby doesn't like peas either. I guess we all have some foods we don't like, right? And your grandson sounds like my sister Wendy's children, they LOVE veggies, then again, my sister loves them too, always has...
Sharon, thanks. Good to hear from you my friend. Oh I don't like lima's one bit. I suppose there are some veggies I won't serve. And thanks for your encouragement and prayers about the speaking. Humility is an area God is growing me for sure :)
Thanks Ang. I left a comment on your site, I hope it posts, I had some trouble :) You're a love :)
