I unearthed some buried treasure last week.
My discovery led me to James chapter four. My initial intent was to find a Bible verse for Memory Verse Monday about drawing near to God. I know there are loads of verses on the topic, but I couldn’t think of one specific reference. So, off I went on my hunt. What I found was like opening a tiny treasure box with a ruby, a diamond, and an emerald.
The emerald about drawing near to God was in James 4:8, but as I read the previous verses, the Bible explained how to draw near to God. So, my Bible memory verse for last week was James 4:6 and what a beautiful ruby it is! This week will be the diamond and next week, Lord willing I’ll reveal the emerald. Here’s my ruby: “But He gives more grace. Therefore He says: ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’” James 4:6
The verses in the beginning of chapter four talk about fighting and war. It doesn’t take much to look around and see the strife in this world. But on a deeper level, I thought about the strife that can be in our homes. Are our homes filled with peace – a peace that can only come from a relationship with God – a relationship that draws near to Jesus?
God says He will give us grace to stop the strife. But there’s something standing in our way. Pride. Someone once pointed out to me that the middle letter in the word prIde is the letter “I”. When we only think of ourselves and about our own happiness, the result is strife.
I don’t like living in strife, do you? But many times, I have been the cause of contention because I think my way is best or what I want to do is “right” - because of pride. Does that mean I can’t have any say in the matter? No, but what and how I say it does matter.
James 4:6 tells us God gives grace to the humble. When we humble ourselves before God, He will help us, giving us the grace we need. I don’t know about you, but that makes me glad because I can’t do it on my own. But then Jesus never intended for it to be that way, did He? He said He’d always be with us.
Notice, that twice in this verse God says that HE GIVES the grace. Are we willing to humble ourselves and accept His grace? His grace gives us the ability to humble ourselves before each other. I recently read a good thought at Susan at Penless Writer's blog. It went something like this: Humility is not thinking less of yourself. It’s thinking or yourself less.
Grace, grace, God’s grace, Grace that is deeper than all our sin… I need that grace, how about you?

Awesome post, bless you dear.
What a nice way to start my day...I just love the book of James...it is direct and convicting at times but isn't it nice to hear the truth...because ultimately it will bring freedom...not pain.
I love what you said about our homes being filled with peace...my verse this past week talked about the God of peace...it reminds me that peace is available to me and my home...by seeking Him...the God of peace not seeking the unrest of this world we inhabit at this time.
Can't wait to see what your next gem wil reveal.
Have a blessed Monday,
Helen
You preach it sister! I can't be reminded of this too much. Thank you for helping reveal these treasures to us.
Thanks for the link, Susan. It's always that "I" that gets us in trouble on every level isn't it?!!!! Great thoughts.
Susan
A very powerful nugget that will get us through this life with peace!
Great words once again.
Blessings,
Sue
Just been catching up with you Susan. Much to read and the mountain photo is beautiful.
Pride is so ugly isn't it? I say that because since writing the MVM post I seem to have been seeing pride in various forms as if illuminated. Urrggh. I love the verse about God lifting up the humble, giving them grace. Oh that amazing grace!!
Hi Denise, thanks for stopping.
Helen, yes the truth does set us free - free from our own sinful tendancies to live in the flesh and not the Spirit. I can't wait to hear about your verse this coming week!
Angie, well, I wouldn't say I'm a preacher, that's my dad's department - lol - but I am a preacher's daughter. Have a great day my friend!
Susan, it sure does!
Sue, so true. Peace is what people seek but never truly find without Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
Barbara, yes, there's too much to read sometimes, isn't there? Thanks for visiting my friend.
Yes, Karen, so true. Pride in its many forms, ugly whatever way we look at it! Thanks for stopping by. God's blessing through memorizing His Word, that's for sure.
Wow, I needed this post today.
Hugs!
Connie

Great post as always. I have been thinking about grace a lot lately. This morning I was listening to "Mercy Me" on my way into work and this lines falls into what you are saying:
We've been told that the heart is just too far gone to save but grace tells us another story
Where glory sends hopelessness away oh grace tells us another story.
Praise God for giving us grace when all else seems lost.
Have a Blessed day,
Greg
What a beautiful post!
Thanks for sharing that jewel.
Much love friend. Lifting a prayer for you!
Angela
Thanks Connie, me too :)
Renee, thanks for stopping. God bless.
Greg, you're right, grace does tell another story - amazing! And I love Mercy Me songs.
Hey Angela, thanks my dear. I appreciate your prayers. We'll be making a decision by the end of this week on the boys' school.
Thank you for digging out this treasure and sharing! I love your question: ARe our homes filled with peace? What a great thermometer of how much we are allowing Christ to rule our homes and our lives. Thank you!
You certainly gave me a lot to think on there and to work on also. Thanks!
Thank you for this reminder about being humble. I loved the quote at the end too...about thinking of oneself less.
Susan, I started reading this post on Monday, but I didn't get to come back and finish it until today. I'm so glad I came back.
The word "grace" has been on my mind all week. I've been blessed with it, but I've not been encouraged to understand the concept of grace. I'm from the school of "rebuke, reprove, blah, blah," which is all good, but it's a school that is often wary of grace.
I needed that reminder on pride, too, because I've been too proud to ask God for something I really, really, really want. I think I may be afraid of the answer. Fear and pride are a horrible mix.
So, thank you, so much Susan for all of that. Also thanks for sharing the hymn quote from the other Susan (Penless Thoughts.) I love hymns, and hymns usually bring the message home for me.
Peace, y'all!
Kim, the Lord's really been impressing this on me lately. A divided house will not stand. God bless my friend :)
Dot, yes, much food for thought for me too :) I'm glad we have a patient Heavenly Father :)
Yes, Sharon, I really need to work in this area and let the Lord have His way.
Nedra, I'm glad you stopped back. Our God is perfect in all His ways, perfectly balanced in His character and dealings with people. He's both justice and grace, a perfect blend. It really blows my mind to think about it... And about the hymns? Me too...
