A Walk in the Woods

There is a patch of woods behind our house...

Last week I took a walk with my dog, my six-year-old son, my mother-in-law, and my college-age niece. The sun shone brightly and the air was crisp and clear. We bundled up in warm coats and meandered into the small wilderness beyond our backyard.

The path soon ended and we wound our way past fallen branches, deeper into the beckoning woods. We zigzagged past thorn brambles that snagged at our sleeves. We stepped around circles of mud left from a recent rainfall.

"Everyone, look up," I said. "See how tall the trees are?" The tree branches fanned into wooden hands pointing to a sky as blue as the color of my son's eyes.

"Wait...do you hear that?" My niece said. A hollow hammering sound echoed through the air. We scanned the woods, straining to see the source of the hammering. "Look!" My niece pointed to a distant tree. "A woodpecker!"

We continued on our short hike and climbed over a fallen tree. Soon we came to a secret place in the woods - a green thatch of bamboo. Although bamboo does not commonly grow in Southeastern Pennsylvania, years ago a neighbor must have planted it and now a dense grove of trees populates this area of the woods.

My niece picked up a fallen bamboo branch and gave it to my son to use for a walking stick. My six-year-old promptly turned it into a bow-staff, swinging the stick in a circular motion as he has seen his older brother do for karate.

"Be careful," Grandma warned.

We stood at the edge of the bamboo. Narrow leaves that topped the pole-like stalks swayed in the cold wind. I stepped into the shadow of the fairy-tale forest. The leaves wove together tightly forming a thick green canopy.

"I wonder what kind of magical creatures live in this grove of trees. Elves, maybe?"

"Oh Mom," my very grown-up six-year-old said. "There's no such thing as elves."

I smiled while pondering the ever-practical mind of my young son. "Oh yeah, you're right. Well, let's keep going."

Minutes later, we made it to a clearing where a creek trickled across a path of stones. My son quickly hopped across the water and scrambled up the embankment. The dog followed close behind.

Finally, we had arrived at the other side of the woods. There we discovered an old paved path leading into a quiet neighborhood. We walked along the road past a few houses and into a field. Along the edge of the grassy marsh was a small opening leading back into the woods.

"There's our house." I pointed to the structure in the distance peeking through the line of trees. The tree branches were still barren from the winter but the arrival of spring’s promise was right around the corner. In fact, it was right beneath my feet.

"Look at this." I bent down to inspect a circle of green with tiny white bell-shaped flowers. I plucked one of the gems from the ground and tried to show my son. But something else green had caught his eye.

In a flash, he was off and running - running to an old rusted green swing set from years gone by at the edge of the woods. There was no longer a swing hanging from the tattered frame, but it was a perfect climbing structure for young boy.

I turned to my son as I exited the woods. "Come on hon. It's time to go home."

I breathed in the crisp air and plunged my hands deep into my coat pockets. Silently, I thanked God for this day and for another special family memory.

Thank you Jesus for this walk in the woods.

Spring is here! The daffodils are out; the tulips are trying to do "something," and the green is replacing the brown. I love that spring and Easter come together...new birth, new life, new beginnings. Praise God!

Hey, how are you Susan?

What a wonderful story. Sometimes the best things in life are simple ones shared with your family.

Thank you Susan! I feel like I just finished the walk with you. Even a cold shiver came across me as you descibed the crisp air and plunging your hands into your pockets! Beautiful story, beautiful memory!

Susan, how encouraging to hear you tell about that walk in the woods and to hear you say what your little one said about elves.

It shows that children are listening to what you teach them. It reminds me that I have much to teach the children in my life, even though I am still waiting for some of my own.

Hmmm...a multi-generational family walk? I'm going to have to try that sometime.

Dot, thank you and yes, it is.

Susan, a lovely day.

Connie, new life indeed :) I'm fine, a bit under the weather health wise right now. I'll touch base in an email :)

Greg, yes, usually the simple ones top the list.

Angie, glad you could come along on the walk :)

Monsoon-dreams, thank you :)

Kim, thank you for your encouraging thoughts :)

Nedra, we were out for about an hour or so, just enough for my little one. And about those elves? My son is at that point in his life where everything is true or false. Not a bad place to be, eh? Those gray areas are tough, but God helps to make it clear as we seek His face :)

Oh that is precious. What precious memories we make when we take time out from life to just soak in God's creation. What a blessing for you all. We had a walk through our woods yesterday too! It was the first time we (me and my girls)ventured down the man made path and it was fun.
Much love,
Angela

thank you for sharing this very visual & special walk with us. I felt I could see each step as you described it. I'm longing for spring here - my crocuses are bloomed & my tulips are up but winter keeps trying to hold on, much MUCH longer than normal. It was almost snowing yesterday. *blah*
I'm feeling great this week though! Baby is sooo active, I feel like a human punching bag...but I love it! I will have to get back into blogging again soon! HUGS!

Sue, glad you could see it clearly :)

Angela, thanks. I'm so glad you got to go on a little hike too. I hope your foot is doing okay after that :)

Amrita, yes, a good day. Is there anywhere near where you live where it is good to take walks?

Maxine, yes a nice little blessing very near by. The woods eventually leads out to an elementary school, so we're not total wilderness :)

Ah Sharon, maybe one day we'll get to take a walk together my friend. I love California. I was only there once and drove part way down the coast with my hubby. Beautiful! We hiked the Big Sur and watched the sun set afterward. Some of your walks/hikes have looked delightful!

Barbara, yes a true blessing indeed. Especially as I've not been feeling well lately with some dizziness. I look back on that walk and I am very thankful. I hope and pray to be back out walking and exercising again soon.

Oh Becky, I'm so glad to hear you're doing well, and that precious little baby! A gift from God for sure! Oh I remember what that feels like with all the movement - amazing - painful at times, but amazing nonetheless! I used tell my husband that it felt like our youngest was pedaling a bicycle in my belly! I'm looking forward to warmer weather too. It does make for good walks. I'm sure you'll be doing that again soon!

Yep, that crisp air is still here. I just sat on the sidelines yesterday, (who am I kidding, sat, I ran around with my six-year-old) at my teen's baseball game. Brrr...
